How do you leave?
by helenhall inwhen every single person you know is a witness, how do you leave?
has anybody here left, and had nobody on the outside.
because that's where i would be.

helenhall,
Thelma and Louise is a really great payback movie. Brad Pitt played a role as a young drifter. Some of the best footage of him in his young, gorgeous years.
If your friend mentioned this movie, she might be your best bet for a friend to fade away with.

It's tough. It takes a long time and a lot of adjustments. I am still in the process after a few years. I do think it best to just fade into the background. You need to try and make some friends on the outside first, if possible.
I thought my non-jw extended family would help make up the gap. Didn't work out so well. I think it takes a long time to overcome the mind control when you are dealing with close family that are still in. It's kinda like living in two separate worlds.
Take your time and explore other ways of thinking. I didn't realize how entrenched the "jw think" had become. I am still finding their tendrils and trying to extract them from my life. Time is your best friend. Get to know yourself again. I was "missing" for decades.
Wishing you the best. choosing life

Do you feel reading through the bible in the past has benefited you at all?
by Hope4Others inputting the doctrine aside do you feel it has given you any advantages?
case in point my son posts on university sites and often the topic about the bible.
and god come up.

Yes, the Bible has been claimed to be many things. How would you know what the Bible really is if you had never read it? What I regret is letting one small group of men tell me what it says.
Reading it wthout their bias, including their translation, is beneficial. Then you get to decide for yourself what importance it has in your life.

Anyone taking Topamax?
by BrentR inthis is by far the most horrible bizzare med i have ever taken.
do the side effects diminish with time?
i can't get any straight answers from the neuro.

I took it for about three days. Couldn't think and felt disoriented. I know others who have taken it for years and say the side effects tapered off. It didn't help my migraines, but I didn't give it much chance either.

First missed memorial
by metaspy inthis past weekend (as we all know) was the memorial for jws.. this year marked a huge step for me.. i didn't go.
ever since my mom got baptized, i think i have gone every year.. .
when my mom asked if i went, i simply told her no.. i had gone over my aunt's house and didn't attend the memorial.. she gave me an earful, but i didn't find it intimidating.. .

Last year was the first year I didn't go. It was amazing what a difference it made with the ones I know as jws still. The looked at me with such suspician after that, kinda like I was dangerous.
If you ever want to test whether jws are a cult, try leaving them honorably. They won't allow it.
By the way, congrats. I know it wasn't easy. Some day I hope we all have our loved ones set free and it just won't matter anymore. A non-issue.

using your car in service
by megaflower ini did not mind occasionally useing my vehicle out in service but the elder who did the morning text use to volunteer my car all the time.my pet peeves were:.
1. people walking through mud, grass clippings(rural territory) and just hoping back into the car.
mudd all over carpet.

Service sure used a car up fast. I didn't mind driving, but I hated the muddy days. Leave it to jws to go tracking around in the pouring rain. Inevitably, someone would spill their giant soda or coffee and that is one sticky mess.
I think when I pioneered, it was the worst. Most pioneers had a favorite beverage that they carried around all day like a giant baby bottle.
On a more positive note, I actually like to drive around the countryside and saw a lot of nice country places I would not have otherwise.

My JW Daughter Calls Me - First Time in 9 Months - Great Conversation !
by flipper inas many of you know , me and my fading 23 year old son have been trying to reach out to my polite 21 year old jw daughter .
sending cards, letters , phone calls just to let her know we love her, miss her , and remind her of good family times we've had in the past !
not being pushy - just being authentic with her !

Congrats on reconnecting with your daughter. I have 2 grown children that are still in and talk to me, but jw topics are off limits. It would be so nice to have a conversation unfiltered by the society's influence.
You only get one father. Maybe she's coming to realize that and missing you. I agree love is the answer. Unconditional love. Wishing you the best.

J.W's Forbidden To Use The Word "Lucky"
by Rapunzel inon another thread, a poster alluded to the witness prohibition on uttering the word "lucky," as the word "lucky" is associated with dreaded paganism.
as i recall, instead of saying "lucky", witnesses are "counseled" to employ the term forunate.
the problem is this - the roman goddess of good luck was named fortuna; her greek equivalent was named tyche.

We weren't allowed to use lucky or fortunate in my congo. We had to say something like, I hope it works out well or I hope you have success. It got pretty complicated at times.
Petty and crazy.
